What Is Considered A Serious Car Accident?

Car accidents are divided into one of a number of categories depending on the level of injury sustained by those involved.

Despite what you may initially think, a car accident’s severity isn’t determined by how bad the accident looks or how much damage has been done to the vehicles involved. It’s possible for people to walk away virtually unharmed from dangerous-looking, high-speed rollovers – and it’s equally possible for serious injuries to be sustained in what at first glance seems like a relatively minor crash.

It’s for this reason that accidents are classed as ‘serious’ only when people have sustained serious injuries – even if the accident itself didn’t look too bad.

According to road accident definitions set out by Leicestershire County Council, a serious car accident is one in which ‘at least one person is seriously injured but no person is killed.’

Injuries often associated with serious car accidents include:

  • Sternum fractures
  • Broken bones
  • Severe hip pain
  • Severe head injuries
  • Back and chest injuries
  • Internal injuries
  • Deeply penetrating wounds

The Types of Serious Car Accidents

Now we’ve cleared up what constitutes a serious car accident, let’s briefly examine how they can occur. Typically, the worst injuries occur in sudden accidents, where a car’s occupants experience high g-forces; the rapid deceleration or acceleration experienced in head-on collisions, t-bone crashes and rear end shunts can cause severe and lasting injuries.

This isn’t always the case, however. As discussed above, even relatively innocuous-looking crashes can leave those involved seriously injured.
